The move comes amid escalating rhetoric between the two nuclear powers, triggered by Trump's ultimatum to Russia to halt its full-scale invasion of Ukraine by August 8 or face new"severe" tariffs.

On July 28, Medvedev responded by warning that Trump's pressure campaign is a step toward war"not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country."

Trump then said on August 1 that he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to "appropriate regions".

"We always want to be prepared, and that's why I sent two nuclear submarines into the region," Trump told Newsmax."I just want to make sure that his (Medvedev's) words are just words and nothing more." Read more about it HERE.

Known for his aggressive rhetoric, Medvedev repeatedly threatened nuclear escalation.

"To my friends in Russia: President Trump seeks peace, not conflict. However, please understand that he is not (Barack) Obama, he is not (Joe) Biden, and he will not be played with. You are overplaying your card," US Senator Lindsey Graham wrote on Ix 1. August.

Trump previously accused Medvedev of"entering into very dangerous territory", calling him a"failed former president" and warning him to "watch his words."

The US president has threatened to impose secondary tariffs of 100% on Russian oil if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a peace deal by August 8.  The tariffs Trump mentioned are expected to be secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian oil, gas and other products, such as China and India.

Senior US diplomat John Kelly told the United Nations Security Council on July 31 that the United States is ready to implement"additional measures to ensure peace".

Earlier this week, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whittaker also said in an interview with Newsmax that Trump still has the leverage to insist on a diplomatic solution to the war against Ukraine and has the ability to stop Russia's capacity to finance the war effort.

Russia reacted

Politicians  and commentators close to the Kremlin today downplayed the importance of the deployment of two US nuclear submarines near Russia, which was announced yesterday by US President Donald Trump.

"The two submarines are not a new threat to Russia's national security," former air force general and current member of the State Duma Leonid Ivlev told the state news agency TASS, adding that Russia is well aware of such American military action.

Another deputy, Viktor Vodolacki, expressed a similar opinion. He considered any attempt to intimidate Russia pointless, pointing out that Russia has a large fleet of nuclear submarines.
