Jakarta, CNN Indonesia --

The Israeli- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announced that it has officially ended its"mission" in Gaza.

GHF sparked controversy after being tasked with distributing food aid in Gaza last May.

"From the beginning, the goal of GHF has been to meet urgent needs, prove that new approaches can succeed where others have failed, and ultimately hand over those successes to the broader international community," said GHF Executive Director John Acree.

The GHF statement referred to the terms of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that took effect last October. The GHF's dissolution also followed the establishment of the US-backed Civil-Military Coordination Center, which was said to coordinate aid to Gaza.

"Therefore, we are suspending our operations because we have succeeded in our mission to demonstrate that there is a better way to deliver aid to the people of Gaza," Acree added, as reported by Al Jazeera.

He also claimed GHF as the only reliable and safe aid operation providing free food directly to Palestinians in Gaza, on a large scale and without diversion.

This statement by the GHF directly contradicts many key figures in the international humanitarian community.

Last August, 28 experts at the United Nations called for the GHF to be disbanded because it was a"disturbing example of how humanitarian aid is being exploited for covert military and geopolitical agendas."

The experts also said Israel and foreign military contractors continued to open indiscriminate fire on people seeking aid at distribution sites operated by the GHF.

Reports reveal that 859 Palestinians have been killed around GHF locations since the start of its operations in late May.

Furthermore, experts note that Gaza refugees have so far been forced to undertake long and dangerous journeys to several GHF locations to receive aid. This differs from the UN aid delivery model, which emphasizes direct delivery to affected communities.
