Trump's Speech to Israeli Parliament

TEL AVIV/OSLO: For over an hour, President Donald Trump addressed the Knesset. – This is the beginning of the age of faith. The sun is shining on the Holy Land, which is finally at peace, Trump said.

After 738 days, the exchange of hostages and prisoners between Hamas and Israel is a fact.

  • The first seven Israeli hostages were handed over to the Red Cross after 7 a.m. They have now been handed over to the Israeli military and have arrived in Israel.
  • The last 13 were handed over to the Israeli defense forces at 10:45 a.m.
  • This means that all 20 hostages are back in Israel. These are the hostages who are still alive.
  • Four dead hostages are also said to have been handed over, according to NTB.
  • The hostages were taken to the Re'im military base, where they met their families. They will then be taken to the hospital.
  • On the Israeli side, in the prisons, nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners boarded buses. 1,716 of them were driven into Gaza, while 154 have been deported out of Israel and Palestine.

Back in Israel – smiling

From the Re'im military camp in Israel, the first photos of the now-released hostages Bar Kupershtein, Gut Gilboa-Dallal, Gali Berman, Ziv Berman, Eitan Mor, Matan Angres and Alon Ohel, published in Israeli media.

Several of them are smiling and appear to be in – physically speaking – good shape.

Last winter, the Israeli hostages were paraded by Hamas before being handed over to Israel. This time, there is no parade – just a handover to the Red Cross, which transports them to a military base.

38 buses arrive in Gaza

Outside Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis in Gaza, bus after bus arrived with the many Palestinian prisoners who have now returned to Gaza.

In a statement, Hamas writes that the exchange is a result of Israel's failure to extract Israeli hostages by force.

Several buses with prisoners have now arrived in the West Bank. In advance, Israeli forces are said to have raided the homes of the families of the prisoners who are going here. They have reportedly been warned not to celebrate. They have also been told not to talk to journalists.

Outside Ramallah in the West Bank, there are reports of tear gas and bullets being used as people wait for Palestinian prisoners outside the Ofer prison on Monday morning. A young man has reportedly been shot. Various videos from the same area show unrest, but the circumstances are unclear.

On Instagram, CNN correspondent Nada Bashir, who is on the scene, has published images of a flying blade released from a drone over the area. It says We follow you everywhere.

Trump: – An incredible triumph

US President Donald Trump landed in Israel before 9 a.m. He was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog.

– This is the beginning of the age of faith. The sun is shining on the Holy Land, which will finally have peace. A country and a region that will live in peace forever. This is a historic start for a new Middle East. It is an incredible triumph for Israel and the world, Trump said in his speech to the Knesset on Monday.

He made sure to pay tribute to Netanyahu, calling the Israeli prime minister a man of exceptional courage and patriotism.

– And he's not the easiest to negotiate with. But that's what makes him great, Trump said.

Evicted politicians from the National Assembly

While Trump boasted about the American negotiating team, there was a commotion in the Knesset.

Suddenly, security guards threw out two parliamentarians who were protesting.

– It was very effective, commented Trump.

And continued.

"From Gaza to Iran, bitter hatred has brought nothing but misery, suffering and failure," Trump said.

He says Gaza must focus on restoring stability, security, dignity – and economic development. The door for friendship and cooperation is also open to countries like Iran.

The war is over, says the American president.

“Hamas will follow the disarmament plan,” Trump said.

Netanyahu: I am committed to this peace

– You are committed to this peace, I am committed to this peace, and together we will achieve peace, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he addressed the National Assembly with President Donald Trump present.

– We have done it before in the Abraham Accords and will do it again, he continued, referring to the agreement during Trump's previous presidency that normalized relations between Israel and the four Sunni Muslim countries of Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan and Morocco.

– Peace will come sooner than people think with Trump's leadership.

Netanyahu further said that he has nominated Trump to receive the Israel Prize as the first non-Israeli ever. It is the most prestigious award in Israel, he said.

“Thank you for everything you have done for us,” Netanyahu told Trump.

He also made a reference to the Nobel Peace Prize.

– The second prize is just a matter of time before you get it, you will get it. But I want you to get the Israel Prize, our most prestigious award, he said.

Decorated the streets

On the road between the airport and Jerusalem, American flags hung on every lamppost.

The work of hanging the blue, white and red colours continued until late Sunday evening, creating long queues in and out of the holy city, with several roads being closed for the occasion.

Hundreds of people spent the night at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv to witness the moment when the hostages were released.

What is the agreement about?

Trump's peace plan began on Friday. Israel stopped bombing the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces began to withdraw. On Sunday, aid began to flow in slowly after Israel has barely approved humanitarian aid into the enclave for the past two years.

The exchange is the most crucial step of the peace agreement so far.
