Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with US President Donald Trump about bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses following days of Russian attacks.
“I informed President Trump about Russia’s attacks on our energy system,” Zelensky wrote on “X” following the phone call, “and I appreciate his willingness to support us. We discussed opportunities to bolster our air defense, as well as concrete agreements that we are working on to ensure this. There are good options and solid ideas on how to truly strengthen us.”
The call came within hours of Russian forces launching massive overnight attacks across multiple regions of Ukraine, killing at least six civilians and injuring dozens more. Homes, schools, energy facilities, and public buildings were damaged or destroyed in Chernihiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kherson, and Sumy.
And these attacks, in turn, came just a day after Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine’s energy grid and residential areas, killing a 7-year-old boy in Zaporizhzhia and leaving much of Kyiv without power.
Officials said the strikes involved drones, missiles, and artillery and targeted repair crews, residential areas, and critical infrastructure.
“I congratulated @POTUS on his success and the Middle East deal he was able to secure, which is an outstanding achievement. If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well—including the Russian war,” Zelensky wrote.
