Cardinal Rodríguez calls for people not to be blinded by ideologies

In his Sunday homily, Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez warned that indifference can be costly for both the faith and the country. The prelate highlighted the presence of people of diverse political leanings at the polling stations and affirmed that this diversity represents not a danger, but a blessing.

Rodríguez emphasized: “We are a living country. Those who think differently should not be forced into our positions. When fanatical stances are adopted in politics, Jesus ceases to be present. Jesus came to free us from ideologies so that they do not blind us. God does not want enemies among brothers. A country where everyone shares the same opinion is not a democracy. We do not all think alike. We must not allow ideology to drag us down. In every party there are good people, but there are also corrupt people.”

The cardinal stressed the importance of maintaining diversity of thought and the need to reject imposition and political fanaticism, recalling that democracy is strengthened by pluralism and mutual respect. He insisted that peaceful coexistence and the recognition of the other as a brother or sister are fundamental for Honduras.

To the Honduran people and the international community, I want to speak clearly and directly, as I always have. At this crucial time for my country, stability and trust are not just empty words; they are the foundation of our future. And at the heart of that stability is the vital and strategic relationship between Honduras and the United States of America.

National Police warn about anonymous audio recordings that seek to intimidate voters

The Honduran National Police warned this Saturday about the circulation of anonymous audios disseminated on messaging platforms with the apparent purpose of generating fear and inhibiting citizen participation.

Police authorities indicated that specialized units activated technical analysis and tracking protocols to identify those responsible.

In response, the institution noted that, in coordination with the Armed Forces and bodies guaranteeing the electoral process, it implemented the Electoral Security Plan 2025. This plan includes police presence at polling stations, transportation routes, urban and rural areas, highways, and border crossings.

Authorities stated that the goal is to allow every Honduran to exercise their right to vote free from fear, pressure, or intimidation, in an environment of peace and respect. The police emphasized the importance of inter-institutional coordination to maintain order during the electoral process.

The National Police urged citizens to verify the origin of any suspicious content before forwarding it. They also reminded the public that disseminating messages intended to intimidate, disrupt public order, or unlawfully influence electoral processes is a crime under Honduran law.

The Honduran Penal Code establishes that those who disseminate messages with the intention of threatening, instilling fear or coercing the vote are subject to penalties of four to six years in prison and economic sanctions, depending on the severity and the proof of the intention to alter the democratic process.

Former Trump official called for transparent elections

Carlos Díaz-Rosillo, former U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, expressed his expectation on Saturday that the general elections in Honduras would be clean and transparent. Díaz-Rosillo warned of the possible imposition of strong sanctions if electoral fraud were proven.

During statements to reporters in Tegucigalpa, Díaz-Rosillo, who was part of President Donald Trump's cabinet, emphasized: “I hope it will be a clean and transparent process, that the will of the Honduran people will be fulfilled with great transparency.”

As founding director of the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom in Miami, Díaz-Rosillo warned about factors that could affect the Honduran electoral process, such as the militarization of election day, possible failures in the counting system, and the generation of doubts that could lead to subsequent conflicts. He also called on observers and citizens to be very vigilant to ensure the transparency of the vote count.

Díaz-Rosillo expressed his concern that Honduras might repeat what happened in Venezuela, where, he asserted, the elections were rigged. “I hope that doesn’t happen here. Our real concern in the United States is that the will of the people won’t prevail in tomorrow’s election,” he emphasized.

Regarding the presidential candidates, he indicated that Nasry Asfura, of the National Party, represents change, while Rixi Moncada (Liberty and Refoundation Party) and Salvador Nasralla (Liberal Party) hold similar positions and reflect political continuity. He emphasized that the US president's endorsement of Asfura demonstrates Washington's confidence that the candidate would strengthen the relationship between the two countries and described him as"the best option not only for Honduras, but also for relations with the United States."

Díaz-Rosillo emphasized: “It is not common for President Trump to give such strong and favorable support to a candidate from another country, and the fact that he did so two days before the elections, I think, shows that he is confident that with ‘Tito Asfura’ Honduras will fare much better.”

What's at stake in these presidential elections?

The election will also determine the composition of the new National Congress, with 128 seats up for grabs. These positions will be crucial for forming majorities and ensuring political stability over the next four years.

At the local level, the process will completely reshape the political landscape. Voters will select the country's 298 mayors and their municipal government teams. In total, more than 2,000 councilors are being elected, making the election relevant at all levels, from rural areas to major cities.

Days before the presidential elections in Honduras, US President Donald Trump reiterated his strong support for conservative candidate Tito Asfura. In a social media post, the US president asserted: “Democracy is on the line in the upcoming elections in the beautiful country of Honduras on November 30. Will Maduro and his narco-terrorists take control of another country as they did with Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela? The one who defends democracy and fights against Maduro is Tito Asfura, presidential candidate of the National Party.”
