Friedrich Merz

For the first time in a few days, large quantities of aid have been reaching the starving population in the Gaza Strip. Chancellor Merz sees this as only a first step and wants to set up an airlift with other countries.

In light of the humanitarian emergency in the Gaza Strip, the German government is setting up an airlift for relief supplies. As Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced after a meeting of the Security Cabinet at the Federal Chancellery, the project will be implemented jointly with Jordan. France and Great Britain are also prepared to support such an airlift for food and medical supplies.

While this is only"a very small aid" for the people in Gaza, it is a contribution the government wants to make."We want to end the humanitarian suffering of the civilian population in Gaza as quickly as possible," said the CDU politician. The aid convoys and airdrops recently permitted by Israel are"an important first step." More must now follow quickly, Merz said."Israel must immediately, comprehensively, and sustainably improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza."

No expulsions, no annexation

The Chancellor reiterated the German government's call for a permanent ceasefire. To achieve this, the radical Islamist Hamas must clear the way, release the hostages, and lay down its weapons. German citizens continue to be among those abducted.

Merz warned Israel that there should be no expulsions in the Gaza Strip and no further steps toward the annexation of territories in the West Bank. The recognition of a Palestinian state—as announced by France—is not currently up for decision by the German government. This is"not a first, but one of the potentially final steps" on the path to a two-state solution.

Merz wants to talk to Netanyahu on the phone

To continue diplomatic efforts, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) is expected to travel to the region on Thursday. Merz himself announced that he would speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again that evening.

The Chancellor also promised arrangements for a"Gaza Reconstruction Conference." Federal Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (SPD) will take the lead for Germany, coordinating with partners in the region, as well as with France and Great Britain.

According to Merz, no further steps were decided at the security cabinet meeting that could increase pressure on the Israeli government. However, they did consider"what options might be available." Now, they should wait for the talks to conclude."However, we reserve the right to take such steps," the chancellor added.
