Trump's Reactions and Statements

NATO Defense Spending Increase

Der Spiegel correspondent Marc Pitzke summarized what is worth knowing about the American president's appearance in The Hague in three points. First, he highlighted that - although everyone feared what would happen - Donald Trump behaved unusually well. According to him, this was mainly due to the fact that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte - as he puts it - flattered him without shame or shame, and the president was also apparently very happy that the Dutch royal couple, Willem-Alexander and Máxima, invited him to their palace in The Hague.

Although some feared that Donald Trump would do or say something that would stall the negotiations, nothing of the sort happened, instead he called the meeting “extremely productive” and specifically highlighted that it had been agreed that member states would spend five percent of their GDP annually on basic defense requirements and defense and security-related spending by 2035. Self-praise was not absent this time either, but in addition to mentioning his own merits, he also praised the other heads of state and government. “The love and passion they showed for their country was incredible,” he said.

Marc Pitzke notes that not everything went smoothly for Trump, as he planned to appear as a true peacemaker in The Hague due to the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, but an intelligence report was released that questioned the success of the American attacks, and journalists asked about it.

Trump did not take this well, stuck to his position, called the media scum, and at a press conference, informally"appointed" Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was also present, as Secretary of War.

He also announced that Israel had people on site who would personally verify the results of the attack on the Fordow nuclear facility. According to Pitzke, this was likely a reference to an operation by the Israeli intelligence service, the Mossad. He added that Trump had leaked Israeli secrets before, which led to tensions between the two countries.
