Initially, there were widespread assumptions that the airspace was violated by a"Shahed" drone, which Russia uses in the war against Ukraine, but later the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service announced that border guards in the Vilnius region had detected a homemade aircraft that had flown in from Belarus, resembling an airplane. After crossing the border, it crashed in Lithuanian territory.
The aircraft crashed near the closed Shumsk border checkpoint, about a kilometer from the border.
According to preliminary information, it is made of plywood and foam plastic, and most likely was not carrying any cargo. The object does not pose any danger.
Fighter jets from the NATO Baltic Airspace Patrol mission, which were in the air at the time, changed their alert status from training mode to mission mode, but the mission was canceled shortly after the object fell.
Skvernelis confirmed to reporters that he was taken to a shelter due to an airspace violation.
"The security service told us to go to the shelter, which we did," said the speaker of parliament.
He said he could not give further details, adding:"The most important thing is that it is no longer flying."
