Unofficially: The US has set conditions for Ukraine
The United States wants Ukraine to sign a framework for a peace agreement with Russia by next Thursday, November 27. That's not all. The US also allegedly"threatened Kiev with a halt to intelligence sharing and arms deliveries" to persuade it to accept the framework for a peace agreement. Ukraine is under more pressure from Washington than in any previous negotiations, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters."They want to end the war and they want Ukraine to pay the price for it," one of the sources said.
American peace plan
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US officials in Kyiv, including Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll. He received the US peace plan from them. The leader did not provide details of the document, but according to press reports, 28 points of the plan contain solutions unfavorable to Ukrainians. These include recognizing Donbas and Crimea as Russian lands, limiting the size of the Ukrainian armed forces, and agreeing that Ukraine will not join NATO. Regarding lands, in addition to the recognition – including by the US – of Crimea and the Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts as"de facto Russian," two more oblasts, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, are to be frozen along the line of contact. Russia is to relinquish territories it currently controls outside of these five regions. In turn, Ukrainian troops will withdraw from the part of the Donetsk Oblast they currently control, and the withdrawal zone will be recognized as a neutral buffer demilitarized zone. One of the points concerns Poland - European fighter jets are to be stationed there.
According to the document, the Ukrainian military is to be reduced to 600,000, Ukraine will be allowed to join the European Union, and Russia will be invited back to the G8. A full amnesty will be granted for acts committed by both sides during the war. The plan also includes economic elements, including the allocation of some frozen Russian assets to Ukraine's reconstruction, the lifting of sanctions against Russia, and long-term cooperation between the United States and Russia in areas such as artificial intelligence and mining. The document also calls for elections in Ukraine within 100 days of the agreement.
