President Donald Trump says the US military has just attacked another ship carrying “narcoterrorists”, killing three people on board, in an echo of the strike earlier this month that killed eleven.

The legality, or lack thereof, of that first strike has been hotly contested. It broke from America’s usual practice of intercepting ships suspected of drug smuggling and arresting those on board. The President summarily killing people is very much a new policy.

“This morning, on my Orders, U.S. Military Forces conducted a SECOND Kinetic Strike against positively identified, extraordinarily violent drug trafficking cartels and narcoterrorists in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility,” Mr Trump wrote on social media, referring to the area that encompasses Central and South America and the Caribbean.

“The Strike occurred while these confirmed narcoterrorists from Venezuela were in International Waters transporting illegal narcotics (A DEADLY WEAPON POISONING AMERICANS!) headed to the U.S. These extremely violent drug trafficking cartels POSE A THREAT to U.S. National Security, Foreign Policy, and vital U.S. Interests.

“The Strike resulted in 3 male terrorists killed in action. No U.S. Forces were harmed in this Strike. BE WARNED — IF YOU ARE TRANSPORTING DRUGS THAT CAN KILL AMERICANS, WE ARE HUNTING YOU! The illicit activities by these cartels have wrought DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES ON AMERICAN COMMUNITIES FOR DECADES, killing millions of American Citizens. NO LONGER.

“Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”

Elsewhere, the FBI says it has found DNA on a roof at a Utah university campus which is linked to the main suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination. It is thought to be from the spot from which the fatal shot was fired.

On Monday, US Vice President JD Vance presented an episode of The Charlie Kirk Show, demonstrating how close the conservative activist was to the Trump administration.

On the show, Mr Vance said the government would “go after” left wing organisations that “foment violence”. So far, no organisation has been linked to Mr Kirk’s murder.
