Anti-Immigrant Riots

Three suspects have been arrested in Spain for allegedly being involved in the assault of a 68-year-old man in Torre-Pacheco, in the southeastern part of the country. Unrest has been raging in the town for days since the attack.

The main suspect, a 19-year-old man, was arrested at a train station in Errenteria, in the Basque Country region, in the far north of the country. Torre-Pacheco, where the assault took place, is located in the southeastern region of Murcia. The suspect was about to board a train to Irun, near the French border. He presumably intended to flee to France.

The other suspects, two young men of Moroccan descent, aged 21 and 22, were arrested earlier. They are alleged not to have assaulted the victim themselves, but also to have done nothing to prevent the assault. None of the three suspects reportedly live in Torre-Pacheco.

The victim was severely assaulted on the street by three young men on Wednesday. He told Spanish media he didn't know them but thought they were North Africans.

The incident sparked violent riots in the town after far-right groups called for violence against migrants. Torre-Pacheco is a municipality of approximately 35,000 residents, about 30 percent of whom have a migrant background.

Since Friday evening, there have been two nights of heavy fighting between far-right youths and young people with a migrant background. At least five people were injured. Things calmed down somewhat during the night from Sunday to Monday, although the atmosphere remained very tense.

Last night was also unsettled."The Guardia Civil had to disperse a group of 100 residents, mainly of Moroccan descent," correspondent Sven Tuytens told De Ochtend."But it was the first night without confrontations with far-right groups."

Spanish authorities have sent about 100 additional police officers to the town to maintain order."A large-scale security plan has been rolled out. Access to the neighborhood is also strictly controlled to keep outside groups out. People who have no business being there are simply sent back to where they came from."

7 rioters arrested

Police have now identified 80 rioters, most of whom are not from Torre-Pacheco. Many of them reportedly have criminal records for violence. Seven rioters have been arrested. They are suspected of hate crimes, assault, and disturbing public order.

The riots caused a considerable commotion in Spanish politics. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska says the far-right Vox party helped incite the riots. Over the weekend, Vox called for mass deportations of migrants.

Vox, in turn, is pointing an accusing finger at the left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for allegedly not deporting"criminal migrants." Meanwhile, the conservative Partido Popular party, which governs alongside Vox in several places, is trying to distance itself from Vox and the calls for violence.
