Jakarta, CNN Indonesia --

Several people were reportedly killed over the weekend in Gaza City in fierce clashes between Hamas security forces and members of an armed clan, sources said on Monday (13/10).

Clashes first broke out last week between Hamas and the armed Doghmush clan, shortly after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect.

According to residents who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, the gunfire broke out in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City on Sunday night.

"Around 200 members of the (Hamas) security forces were deployed and fought until they succeeded in completely subduing the clan members," said a local resident.

"There were deaths and injuries among the (Doghmush) family, but there were also martyrs and injuries among the (Hamas) security forces," he added.

Another resident gave similar testimony, saying that the situation only returned to calm at around 9:30 p.m. local time.

A source in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Interior Ministry acknowledged that there were casualties on both sides.

The source accused the Doghmush clan of having ties to Israeli forces and involvement in a number of assassinations. The source even stated that around 60 members of the clan had been arrested.

However, the armed clan denied allegations of collaboration with Israel. In a statement, they acknowledged that some of their members had committed"violations," without elaborating. They also accused Hamas security forces of targeting all members of the clan indiscriminately.

"In recent days, it was enough just to be a member of the Doghmush family to be shot in the leg, killed, arrested, or have your house burned down," Abu Al Hassan Doghmush, a senior figure in the family, wrote on Facebook.

Since seizing power in the Gaza Strip in 2007, Hamas has repeatedly engaged in bloody clashes with a number of local clans, including the Doghmush clan.

On Sunday, the Gaza Interior Ministry announced the opening of a"general amnesty period" for "criminal gang members" not involved in any killings during the war.

Since the ceasefire came into effect on Friday, AFP journalists have observed Hamas security forces deployed in various urban areas, markets and along main roads in the Gaza Strip.
