JOHANNESBURG, KOMPAS.com - The Vice President (Wapres) of the Republic of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming, was seen clenching his fists several times while delivering a speech at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Saturday (22/11/2025).

The gesture emphasized his important messages about equitable, inclusive global growth and sustainable financing.

Gibran clenched one fist when he said that the 2025 G20 Summit was a historic moment because it was held on the African continent.

"This is a historic G20 summit, the first ever held on the African continent," he said in his speech in English.

He raised his fist again when he mentioned that global growth must be fair and inclusive.

"Indonesia believes that global growth must be not only strong, but also fair and inclusive, to improve the welfare of every country," said Gibran.

Next, Gibran clenched his fist when conveying fair and balanced sustainable financing.

"Indonesia welcomes the G20's focus on sustainable financing, but ambition must go further to close the gap and pursue adaptation, mitigation, and a just and balanced transition," he said.

Closing his speech, Gibran appeared to clench both his fists against his chest. Both hands were clenched and raised in front of his chest when he said the words 'empower' and 'lift'.

"Cooperation must empower, not dictate. Cooperation must uplift, not create dependency," Gibran emphasized.

It is known that Gibran represented President Prabowo who was unable to attend due to a number of agendas in Indonesia.

The G20 summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa discussed a number of issues.

First, it discusses the issue of sustainable economics, the role of trade and finance in development, and debt problems in developing countries.

Second, the summit will focus on building a resilient world, which includes issues of disasters, climate change, just energy transition, and food systems.

The third session will discuss the issues of decent work and artificial intelligence governance.
