Trump-Zelensky Discussions

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, discussed Ukraine and potential cooperation during their three-hour conversation in Moscow on Wednesday, according to Russian presidential aide Yuriy Ushakov.

The talk came ahead of Trump’s Friday, Aug. 8, ceasefire deadline for Moscow, after which the US president has threatened to unleash sanctions on Moscow if it fails to produce results towards a ceasefire.

Ushakov said the two touched on Ukraine and potential cooperation between Washington and Moscow.

“If we name the topics, then first of all, of course, it is the Ukrainian crisis. And the second topic is the prospects for the possible development of strategic cooperation between the US and Russia,” he said, according to the Russian state-owned news agency Ria Novosti.

But Ushakov has been tight-lipped about the details, saying he will only share more once Witkoff relays the results to Trump.

“The situation now is that our president has full information, that is, our signals, signals from President Trump. And Trump has not yet been informed of the results of this meeting,” Usahkov said.

“Therefore, I would refrain from more detailed comments. Let’s see when Witkoff can report on the conversation that took place today to Trump. After that, obviously, we will be able to supplement my comments now with something more substantial,” he added.

Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, were reportedly present during the talks.

criticized for amplifying Russian propaganda.

Witkoff’s earlier meetings with Putin drew criticism for being overly conciliatory toward Moscow, but it remains unclear whether Trump’s recent U-turn on Ukraine and tougher rhetoric toward Putin have influenced his envoy’s tone or stance during the talks.

Neither Trump nor the White House had issued a statement following Witkoff’s Wednesday meeting with Putin at the time of publication.
