Sensationalized Reporting

According to Italian media reports, a 56-year-old extreme athlete from Austria died today at around 4 p.m. in Porto Sant'Elpidio.

It is believed that Baumgartner lost control of his paraglider due to a sudden illness and crashed into the pool of a hotel complex, injuring a young woman. Since he posted on his Instagram this afternoon that there was too much wind, there is speculation that something else could have gone wrong. Italian media reports that Baumgartner was already dead at the time of the impact.

Baumgartner achieved international fame in 2012 with his stratospheric jump. The extreme athlete from Salzburg managed the highest parachute jump to that point, from a height of 38,969 meters. His record has since been surpassed by Alan Eustace, who jumped from 41,419 meters.
