Conte: “Israel bombs, destroys and rewrites international law. It is a dangerous precedent”

Monday, June 23

Is Israel exaggerating? This expression horrifies me. What does Israel mean by exaggerating? We have a genocide in Gaza. There is no exaggeration, but a genocide that has been going on for 20 months in violation of international humanitarian law.” This is what the leader of the 5 Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, said during the broadcast Non Stop News on Rtl 102.5, about Israel's conduct in the Strip.

“In Gaza,” Conte continued, “a military action is underway against defenseless civilians: over 16,000 children have been killed, the total number of victims has now exceeded 60,000. And people continue to die every day. The daily average is close to 100 Palestinians killed. We cannot speak of exaggeration: this is genocide.”

The former Prime Minister also dwells on the Israeli attacks in Iran : “At this moment, even a good part of public opinion is positively caressing what is happening, because it is thought that in Iran they are ugly, dirty and bad with a theocratic regime that cannot arouse any sympathy with respect to our sensibilities and our values. This is very true. But be careful: Israel does not adhere to the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, it already has its own atomic bombs and is not subject to any IAEA control. We are saying that Israel can not only freely strike nuclear infrastructures or link them to uranium enrichment, but can also run around undisturbed to destroy any connected military site. And it even does so with the declared objective of a change of regime change”.

And he adds: “ We are setting a precedent. What is this? Respect for international law? No, it is Israel that is rewriting the rules of international legality to its liking. Moreover, all the experiences of regime change, from Libya to Iraq to Afghanistan, have been failures, because they have produced instability. An instability that is now being produced at the gates of Europe. And what is Europe doing in all this? It is a spectator, as always “.

Finally, Conte answers a question about former minister Luigi Di Maio, now the European Union's special envoy for the Gulf. When the host asks how he is carrying out his duties, the former prime minister replies firmly:"I am not following him personally now. I believe that the crises that are taking place in the Middle East are beyond his capabilities, his strengths. So, I do not allow myself to judge him."

"But have you spoken to each other anymore," insists the journalist.

"No, we have not spoken to each other anymore," replies Conte. “And do you think there could be something we can work on together in the future?”, the host insists.

Conte cuts short: “ Luigi Di Maio left our community in a bad way. When the Draghi government was in place, he decided to found his own party. From this point of view there is no shared political perspective. It seems clear to me that, in a moment of difficulty in which a compact team was needed to be consistent with the commitments made to our voters, whoever decided to create another party and embrace the Draghi agenda cannot have any future with us “.
