The Houthis announced the death of their prime minister and several other members in an Israeli strike on Sanaa two days ago. This is the highest-profile political figure to be killed in the fallout from the Yemeni-Israeli confrontation over the war in the Gaza Strip.
The Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV channel posted a statement on its Telegram account confirming the killing of"Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi, Prime Minister of the Houthi-affiliated Government of Change and Construction, along with a number of his fellow ministers last Thursday."
The statement continued,"A number of ministers sustained moderate and serious injuries as a result of the Israeli aggression, and they are currently receiving medical care," noting that the attack occurred during a "routine government workshop."
A separate statement said that the head of the Houthi Political Council, Mahdi al-Mashat, issued a decision appointing Mohammed Ahmed Miftah, who had been al-Rahwi's first deputy, to act as the Houthi prime minister.
The Houthis appointed Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi as prime minister of the government operating in the areas under their control in August 2024, succeeding Abdulaziz bin Habtoor.
Israel launched an attack on Sanaa on Thursday, hours after the Israeli military announced it had intercepted a drone launched from Yemen toward Israel.
Israeli airstrikes targeted the Attan area in southwest Sanaa and a house in the Bayt Bous area south of the capital, witnesses in the capital told AFP at the time.
The Israeli military said Thursday it had struck a"military target belonging to the Houthi regime," while unconfirmed Yemeni media reports at the time circulated news of al-Rahwi's death.
