Russian crude oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia through the Druzhba pipeline were interrupted on Monday, officials in Budapest and Bratislava announced.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said the shutdown was caused by an attack on a transformer station along the pipeline route on Ukrainian territory.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha did not confirm the information, but wrote on the X platform that Hungary"can now send complaints to Moscow, not to Kiev."

He stressed that Russia started the war and that Budapest chose to remain dependent on Russian energy, despite warnings about the risks.

The Slovak company Transpetrol confirmed the halt in the flow of oil, stating that transportation within Slovakia is ensured according to plan, but the cause of the suspension lies outside the country's borders.

For its part, the Hungarian company MOL said that the security of supply to the region remains guaranteed and that remedial work is underway.

According to official Russian data, in 2024 Hungary imported almost 4.8 million tons of crude oil through Druzhba, or approximately 95,000 barrels per day.

The Soviet pipeline, which runs through Belarus and Ukraine, remains the main import route for Budapest.
