Reactions to Social Democrats' Decision

This means that the doors of the ruling coalition"For Lithuania" are closing for the Democratic Union led by Saulius Skvernelis.

This became clear after a party council meeting held on Sunday evening.

They would like the chair of the Speaker of the Seimas themselves

"We are changing coalition partners because we are taking into account the situation. We have evaluated the behavior, rhetoric, and positions of the former coalition partners," said Mindaugas Sinkevičius, interim chairman of the LSDP, explaining the party's decision.

"It seems that we have concluded that this work is impossible in that composition of three political parties," he added.

According to M. Sinkevičius, the party branches have very clearly indicated that the coalition should be changed to the one that the party council has now approved.

M. Sinkevičius insisted that he did not yet know whether the peasants would bring other colleagues from the faction with them to the coalition.

Also, when asked whether working with the peasants would be more constructive than with the democrats, he did not dare to speculate. The LVŽS criticized both some of the ruling party's decisions and certain ministers.

"It's hard to say. It's hard to speculate about the future, I'm neither Vanga nor Nostradamus here - I won't guess. Life will show whether the work is possible, how it will go, whether it will be more stable or just more chaotic."

"We hope, want and expect stability. We hope that our partners understand this and strive for it," said the interim leader of the LSDP.

However, the politician added, sometimes it can be observed that behavior is very different when in the position and in the opposition.

"Maybe that behavior will change into that stability and peace," the party chairman mused.

M.Sinkevičius stated that the Social Democrats themselves would like the position of Speaker of the Seimas. According to him, Juozas Olekas would be an excellent fit for this position, but this issue will still need to be resolved.

The interim leader of the LSDP explained that they would like to reach an agreement on the coalition agreement next week. The Social Democrats intend to meet with Nemunas Aušra on Monday at noon.

"There was no talk. If I'm not mistaken, he seems to me to be the elder of the faction - maybe those positions are enough for him," M. Sinkevičius pondered when asked whether new positions are planned for the leader of the"aušrieči" party, R. Žemaitaitis.

He also said that he could not imagine that the current Democratic ministers would be able to continue their work.

"Having individuals in the government cabinet who are not from the coalition majority are perhaps just good, professional, competent people; the political system does not work that way," the politician said.

He"parted ways with S. Skvernelis"

According to M. Sinkevičius,"Nemunas Aušra" has not yet expressed a desire to receive more political positions than it has had so far.

"We have not heard anything about the increased appetite, and we hope that that appetite will be adequate to the number of seats in the Seimas. That math must exist and it does exist," he explained.

M. Sinkevičius himself claimed that he voted for the coalition scenario that did not receive support.

"For that broad coalition, four political organizations," he said.

The LSDP leader insisted that they had"not burned any bridges" with S. Skvernelis and parted ways in a businesslike manner.

"I don't feel offended or unheard in any way. We've just worked together, he was my head of government, I'm a member of his team, so no bridges have been burned."

"It's just that in life, sometimes you have to make choices, and the community has told us which path we should take," said M. Sinkevičius.

An extraordinary session of the Seimas is scheduled to take place on August 21 and 26.

The mood has changed

The Social Democratic Party branches could submit their verdict on what coalition they would like by Friday evening.

According to Lrytas, more party members chose"Nemunas Aušras" and LVŽS.

Such sentiments were dictated by the ultimatums of the Democratic Union"For the sake of Lithuania" and its leader, the Speaker of the Seimas, S. Skvernelis.

While former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas was still in office, the Democrats stated that they would leave the coalition if he did not resign. And after G. Paluckas' departure, when discussions about a new coalition began, the Democrats assured that they could no longer work with the"aušriečiai" led by R. Žemaitaitis.

Such outbursts simply infuriated the Social Democrats.

The LSDP negotiating group has been meeting with potential coalition partners all week. The very first to arrive at the party headquarters on Monday were representatives of Nemunas Aušra, followed by the Democrats the next day, and finally, they met with the farmers to talk.

A letter distributed to party members by the LSDP coalition negotiating group on Saturday states that the Social Democrats no longer see the possibility of continuing to work within the current ruling majority - together with Nemunas Dawn and the Democratic Union"For the Sake of Lithuania".

At that time, the"Austrians" themselves announced their readiness to continue working in the coalition, but, in their opinion, there could be no place for"divisive forces".

In turn, the LVŽS announced on Friday that it would form a negotiating group if the Social Democrats invited them to the coalition.

One of the leaders of the LSDP and a member of the negotiating group, Juozas Olekas, told Žinių radiju that he believed that the parties forming the ruling majority could sign a new coalition agreement at the beginning of next week.
