Germany was just sweating in 32-degree heat and blazing sun. But on Sunday evening, everything changed: Low Pressure System Isaac brought hail, rain, and storms.
Summer was still showing its best side in the afternoon. Temperatures climbed to 30 degrees Celsius and above in many parts of Germany, with bright sunshine. But by evening, the calm was over: the first showers and thunderstorms reached the southwest of the country – the start of a turbulent week of weather.
Severe thunderstorms move across Germany
Already in the evening, there were some severe thunderstorms across Germany. Storms with heavy rain and gusty winds swept across Krefeld and the Lower Rhine region. In Rhineland-Palatinate, heavy rain and gusty winds caused disruptions to rail traffic, including trees falling onto the tracks.
Thunderstorms hit Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. A broad strip stretching from the southwestern Palatinate through the Eifel, Hunsrück, and Westerwald regions to western North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly at risk. The German Weather Service is warning of localized gale-force gusts and heavy rain.
Southern Bavaria is also affected, with a focus on Swabia in the Danube region. Severe weather is threatening with hail of up to two centimeters, heavy rain of up to 60 liters per square meter, and gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).
The thunderstorm front is expected to reach Berlin and Brandenburg in the evening – heavy rain, hail and gusty winds are also possible here.
Weather conditions remain tense at the start of the week
After the overnight thunderstorms have passed, the weather situation remains tense. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected again on Monday, especially in the afternoon. Heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds are possible. Temperatures will continue to drop.
Tuesday and Wednesday remain changeable
Showers and thunderstorms are expected again in many places on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Longer periods of rain are also possible in the west and south.
On Wednesday, the weather will initially calm down, with more sunshine in the morning. However, by the afternoon, fresh showers and isolated thunderstorms will move in from the west. A stable high is still nowhere in sight.
Summer takes a break
The low pressure system"Isaac" is to blame for the bad weather in Germany, which is bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and chilly temperatures to the start of the new week. The coming days are hardly suitable for swimming or barbecues.
