Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephonic conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reaffirmed New Delhi’s steadfast and consistent position for the peaceful settlement of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and support for efforts aimed at the earliest restoration of peace.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said that President Zelenskyy shared his views on the recent developments related to the war, and he reiterated India’s commitment to extend all possible support in this regard.

The leaders also reviewed progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership and discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

“Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments. I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine," he said in a post on X.

During the conversation, the Ukrainian President briefed the Indian Premier about Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages. He also highlighted yesterday’s strike on the bus station in Zaporizhzhia, where dozens of people were injured in a deliberate Russian bombing of a regular urban facility.

He also accused Russia of continued attacks on Ukraine, saying that when finally there’s an opportunity for a diplomatic solution to the war, Russia is choosing to continue its occupation and violence instead of pursuing a ceasefire.

“I informed about the Russian attacks on our cities and villages, about yesterday’s strike on the bus station in Zaporizhzhia, where dozens of people were injured in a deliberate Russian bombing of a regular urban facility. And this is at a time when there is finally a diplomatic possibility to end the war. Instead of demonstrating readiness for a ceasefire, Russia is showing only its desire to continue the occupation and killings," he said in a long post on X.

Zelenskyy also appealed to India to ensure that decision taken at the ‘peace talks’ are not imposed on his country. “It is important India supports our peace efforts and shares the position… everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with our participation…"

Zelensky also proposed a meeting with PM Modi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Session in the US in September this year.

Zelenskyy Urges Limited Export Of Russian Oil

The two leaders also discussed the sanctions against Russia, and Zelenskyy noted that it is necessary to limit the export of Russian energy, particularly oil, to reduce its potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war.

“It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over Russia sends the corresponding signals to Moscow," he mentioned.

His message on limiting Russian oil exports came days after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff for buying oil from Moscow despite repeated warnings.

Trump, who had announced a 25% plus penalty on India, further hiked the duty by 25% on August 6. While the reciprocal tariffs have come into force, the additional duties will take effect starting August 27.

Meanwhile, India has defended its energy strategy, saying that its crude oil purchases from Russia are “a necessity compelled by global market conditions" and not a political endorsement of Moscow.

It further asserted that the country will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.

“India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," the statement said, underlining the country’s commitment to stable and affordable energy access for its citizens.

The MEA termed the levies as “unjustified and unreasonable" and called out the double standards of the United States and the European Union over their trade ties with Russia. The statement highlighted that the US continues to import uranium hexafluoride from Russia for its nuclear industry.
