MP Noelia Núñez (PP) now admits she has no university degrees: "A mistake."

Wednesday, July 23

She is not a political scientist. Nor a lawyer. Nor a philologist. She has no university degree. Noelia Núñez, a PP deputy for Madrid, a senior official of Alberto Núñez Feijóo in Génova and a rising figure in the party after being elevated by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, admitted this Tuesday, just after eleven at night, that she did not finish any of her studies, contrary to what she herself had sent to the Congress of Deputies and various organizations. What's more, in numerous media interviews she had been presented with her alleged qualifications and yet she had not raised any objection. Until this Tuesday.

"I admit the mistake that appears in the personal profile published in the Congress of Deputies regarding my studies," he wrote in a chain of 11 messages on X, formerly Twitter, at 11:00 p.m."I emphasize that it was a mistake and that there was no intention of deception on my part." The PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) has already demanded his resignation and asked the lower house to remove his CV from his biography."This is neither a minor error nor an exaggeration. It is a conscious and repeated falsehood, which violates the very statutes of the Popular Party, where falsifying a CV is considered grounds for sanction or expulsion."

Núñez, 33, has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media: Instagram, TikTok, X. And as of Tuesday, he had three different versions of his resume. First, on the Transparency Portal of the Congress of Deputies, he appears with a"Double Degree in Law and Legal Sciences of Public Administration," without specifying which universities. Parliamentary sources say that deputies submit their own resumes.

Second. At the private Guatemalan University Francisco Marroquín, based in Madrid, where she teaches Political Science, she holds a"bachelor's degree" in Law from the University of Central Missouri. This information, however, was also corrected this Tuesday and changed to the Complutense University of Madrid. Furthermore, they point out,"she also earned a degree in English Philology and is currently pursuing a double degree in Law and Legal Sciences of Public Administration," without specifying which universities.

A spokesperson for the Madrid campus explained by phone that Núñez is not a professor in the Spanish capital, but in Guatemala, without further explanation. When contacted by the Guatemala campus about this alleged biography, there has not yet been an official response.

And third. Núñez is also the president and spokesperson for the People's Party (PP) on the Fuenlabrada City Council."I decided to study law at the UCM," she explains on the municipal website. This is understood to be referring to the Complutense University and not Missouri University."At the same time as I was studying," she continues,"I started working as an English teacher and, drawn to the language, I began a degree in English Philology at the UNED (National University of Madrid), which I am currently pursuing [...] I went a little crazy and also decided to change my law degree for a double degree in law and legal sciences of public administration." She also does not specify which university.

Here she also boasts of being bilingual in English, with an"intermediate level of French," and self-studying Italian."I consider myself liberal and a social media enthusiast, which is why I took an online Introduction to Marketing course from the University of British Columbia," she explains.

This Tuesday, his various CVs took a 180-degree turn. “Given the confusion generated” about his academic training, Núñez clarified in a chain of messages on X that he “never” intended to deceive anyone. “The PP, in which I believe, acts with total transparency, and I want to do the same [...] I decided to study Law at the UCM, transferred my file to the UNED, and then began a degree in English Studies at the UNED. In 2019, I changed the Law Degree for a Combined Degree in Law and Legal Sciences of Public Administration at the UNED.”

This newspaper asked the PP and the MP herself on Tuesday if she held any of these university degrees, but received no response. The reason, as she explained on X, was"so as not to cover up the government's defeats in the plenary session." Núñez also indicated that she will resume these studies.

The PP statutes require, as a requirement for access to any public office, a declaration of responsibility in which the candidate demonstrates respectability and the appropriate training and experience in the field for which he or she has been elected.

The Madrid MP is a rising figure within the party. At the last National Congress just a few weeks ago, Feijóo himself appointed her again as National Deputy Secretary for Mobilization and the Digital Challenge. “It's good to be reminded that you're a boomer,” Feijóo said. “She's strong. She speaks clearly. From Fuenlabrada, Noelia Núñez.” Núñez, smiling, looked at the plenary, which responded to a standing ovation from the new PP leadership.
