International Summit and Peace Agreement

Trump's Speech to Israeli Parliament

Israel and Egypt declare"peace in the Middle East" and promote their achievements all day long.

It seems that he is aiming to secure national momentum through diplomatic achievements and to secure the next Nobel Peace Prize.

(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Dong-hyun = U.S. President Donald Trump, who visited the Middle East on the 13th (local time) saying he would personally take care of peace in the Gaza Strip, was busy emphasizing his role by touting the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the release of remaining hostages that he brokered as “historic” achievements.

At the Gaza Peace Summit held in Egypt that day, President Trump declared,"Together, we have achieved what everyone thought was impossible. We have finally brought peace to the Middle East."

"This momentous breakthrough we are gathered to celebrate tonight means more than the end of the Gaza war. It will be a new beginning for the entire beautiful Middle East, with God's help," he assured.

The summit, held to sign an agreement declaring a ceasefire in the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, was attended by leaders of some 30 European and Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt and Qatar, which mediated the negotiations, as well as Turkey, Jordan, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The summit was co-chaired by President Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, but it was essentially Trump's one-man show.

President Trump repeatedly emphasized that the event brought together"the greatest leaders, the most powerful leaders, the wealthiest leaders" in the world, and he spent more than 20 minutes shaking hands and posing for photos with the leaders before signing the ceasefire agreement.

And President Trump, standing at the podium, called out the names of the heads of state from each country individually, as if calling roll.

As President Trump spoke, several heads of state lined up behind him like a screen, and the president drew laughter when he said,"I don't know why they chose to stand, but I promise I'll keep it short."

President Trump has repeatedly called the ceasefire agreement he brokered between Israel and Hamas the "greatest deal" ever.

He was so pleased with the hospitality of the heads of state and the media attention that he even treated the media, which he usually criticized as unfair, with kindness.

"I want to thank the media for being so respectful of this agreement," he said."I spent a lot of time on the plane listening to different news broadcasts, and they were all impartial. They were all talking about how great this was."

He was also warmly welcomed in Israel, where he had visited before Egypt.

As President Trump entered the Israeli Knesset, there was cheering and a standing ovation, and lawmakers chanted his name.

The New York Times (NYT) reported that Trump enjoyed Israel's praise, saying that it is rare for an American president, especially one who has been so divisive at home, to be so warmly received abroad.

But despite President Trump's optimism, there remain lingering concerns about whether Israel and Hamas will properly implement the ceasefire agreement.

Bloomberg News reported that there is considerable skepticism about the sustainability of the ceasefire, and that almost as soon as President Trump finished addressing the Israeli parliament, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Hamas had not kept its promise to return the remains of all the dead hostages by that day.

Hamas promised to release all hostages within 72 hours of the ceasefire agreement, but only returned four of the 28 bodies that day, and there is a possibility that the remains of the rest will never be located, CNN reported.

The Times noted that, aside from brief remarks, President Trump has not spoken about what it takes to rebuild Gaza or the future of the Palestinians, and there has been little public discussion about implementing his proposed peace plan for the Gaza Strip.

Some speculate that President Trump's active promotion of the Gaza ceasefire agreement as an achievement during his recent Middle East tour is an attempt to secure national momentum by highlighting diplomatic achievements amidst the unstable domestic situation due to the temporary government shutdown.

Currently, the federal government is experiencing a partial shutdown for nearly two weeks in the United States due to delays in Congress's budget bill, but with both President Trump and the Democratic Party maintaining a hard-line stance, no clear solution is in sight.

First of all, there seems to be more positive evaluation than criticism from the Democratic Party regarding this armistice agreement.

According to CNN, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran against President Trump in the past presidential election, praised the Trump administration's role in the Gaza ceasefire.

President Trump also appears to be seeking to win the Nobel Peace Prize next year, as the international community has highly evaluated the Gaza ceasefire agreement, despite his long-held wish not to win it this year.

At the summit that day, when President Trump called him to the podium to speak, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised President Trump and said he would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize as he was"the best candidate."
