Trump's Weapons Support for Ukraine

General Coverage of Trump's Statements

Donald Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Monday evening.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump threatened Russia with new tariffs if it does not reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days.

He said he would impose"severe tariffs" of "about 100 percent," which he called "secondary tariffs," if no deal was reached within 50 days. Trump said he was"very unhappy" with Moscow's performance.

Speaking about potential tariffs on Russia, Trump said that secondary tariffs on Russia could be imposed without the approval of either the House of Representatives or the Senate.

When asked about calls for a 500% tariff on Russia, he replied that after a certain point, this number is irrelevant and that 100% tariffs will serve the purpose.

The US president says he felt like he had reached an agreement with Russia about the war in Ukraine"about four times." "And here we are still talking."

"I thought we should have made the deal a long time ago, but it just keeps going on and on," he says.

Trump added that many Russian soldiers and Ukrainians are being killed.

Trump said he wanted the war in Ukraine to end, adding that he was"disappointed" with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"So if I were Vladimir Putin today and you were talking about what you plan to do in 50 days and about this report, I would reconsider whether I should take the negotiations on Ukraine more seriously than I do at the moment," said NATO Secretary General Rutte.

The US president said that the US makes the best equipment, the best missiles and"the best of everything".

He says the US will send weapons to NATO, adding that"they will pay for them."

"We're going to make top-notch weapons" and send them to NATO. Then NATO will send them where they're needed, the US president said.

NATO chief Rutte said Trump had made the decision to allow Ukraine to maintain its defenses against Russia, adding that the Europeans would pay for it. Trump said it was"perfectly logical."

Mr Rutte said this was based on the huge success of the NATO summit, adding that Europeans were"taking action".

The NATO chief assured that Ukraine could receive"a truly enormous amount of military equipment" for air defense, in addition to missiles and ammunition.

Trump emphasized that billions of dollars worth of military equipment will now be distributed to Ukraine.

"The Ukrainians continue to fight with extraordinary courage, but they are losing equipment," the US president said.

NATO chief Rutte intervened and said that Russia was bombing cities not for"military purposes" but to cause panic.

Trump was asked whether Patriot missiles or Patriot batteries were being sent to Ukraine.

"Everything. That's all," he replied.

The president explained in more detail that countries would send their Patriot batteries to Ukraine, and the US would send replacements for those countries.

Analysis: Trump"allied" with NATO and Ukraine

Trump's press conference with NATO Secretary General Rutte shows that the US president is "very supportive of NATO and Ukraine issues," said our SkyNews US correspondent James Matthews.

He highlighted the contrast between Trump and Rutte's press conference and his disastrous meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in February, when"American support for the Ukrainian cause could hardly have seemed greater than Kiev needed."

Mr Matthews said: "The whole context and theme was that Ukraine was the victim - this was said by the president who initially blamed Ukraine for starting this conflict."

“But Trump could have been tougher,” the correspondent added. “He’s giving Putin that breathing space — 50 days. That’s a long time, given the aggression with which Putin is waging this war.”

"But now, if you're NATO Secretary General, you'll be quite happy with what you have."
