What could a new military service in Germany look like? After a long dispute, an agreement has been reached between the CDU/CSU and SPD, according to the ARD capital studio. Details are to be announced at a press conference this morning.
According to information from the ARD Berlin studio, the parliamentary groups of the CDU/CSU and SPD, the governing coalition, have reached an agreement on the future structure of compulsory military service in Germany. Details were not immediately available. A press conference is scheduled for 9:00 a.m., preceded by a meeting of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. An SPD meeting is also planned.
In the evening (6 p.m.) the leaders of the CDU/CSU and SPD are scheduled to meet for a session of the coalition committee.
Within the coalition, it had already been expected that an agreement would be reached this week – among other things, on the question of how exactly young men should be selected for military service in the future. According to Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil (SPD), coalition talks on contentious details were"on the final stretch towards an agreement" on Tuesday.
In October, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group blocked the already approved cabinet bill on the new conscription law due to concerns. The sticking points were the targets for troop growth and the selection process in case not enough men and women volunteer for service. The future status of conscripts was also debated. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) wants the conscription law to come into effect at the beginning of 2026.
