The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on two of Russia's largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, citing Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's"refusal to end this senseless war" in Ukraine. These are the first sanctions imposed on Russia by US President Donald Trump since returning to the White House in January.

Trump's move has raised oil prices and caused concern in Hungary and Slovakia, the largest buyers of Russian oil in the European Union.

Orbán said he had discussed the sanctions with Hungarian oil and gas company MOL."We are working on how to circumvent these sanctions," the prime minister said in an interview with state radio Kossuth.

MOL's oil refineries in Hungary and Slovakia depend on Russian oil, which is transported via the Druzhba oil pipeline.
