UPDATE: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bucharest on Sunday to convey Romania's firm protest against the entry of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace and to request measures to avoid such incidents in the future, according to a press release.

The convocation was ordered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the context of the violation of Romania's airspace by a Russian drone on September 13, 2025. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs qualified this act as"unacceptable and irresponsible", emphasizing that such recurring situations amplify threats to regional security.

The Romanian side called on Russia to immediately take all necessary measures to prevent future airspace violations. Romania remains in permanent contact with its allies and other members of the European Union to coordinate the response to these challenges.

Original news: Oana Țoiu announced on Sunday, on Digi24, that the Russian ambassador to Bucharest, Vladimir Lipaev, was summoned to the MFA headquarters for discussions, starting at 6:00 p.m., after, on Saturday, a Russian drone entered our country's airspace.

"The Russian ambassador to Romania has been summoned and will come to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this evening, at 6:00 p.m.," said Oana Țoiu, when asked if the Russian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been summoned.

Asked what she expects to get out of tonight's discussions with the Russian ambassador, she said:"We don't expect to get anything specific out of that discussion, just to communicate Romania's protest very clearly."

Oana Țoiu: We must ensure that these incidents are discouraged

Asked if there is a red line that Romania has communicated to Moscow and if harsher measures can be taken, in addition to this discussion with the Russian ambassador to Bucharest, Oana Țoiu replied:"Of course, yes."

"We are working together with our partners in the European Union, especially on the 19th package of sanctions. And you will also see the reaction of several international partners in solidarity with Romania today and mentioned the collaboration towards this common package of sanctions," she added."We need to make sure that these incidents are discouraged."

Also, asked if the MFA is prepared to expel Russian diplomats from Bucharest if such incidents are repeated, Oana Țoiu stated:"There are several diplomatic instruments, but at this moment the main thing for us is to ensure that we strengthen international collaboration both within NATO and within the EU, because the first thing we need to do is to ensure that these incidents are discouraged. Indeed, it is not unlikely that they will happen again from time to time. We are prepared and, together with our allies, we are also doing the necessary things to build the decisions, the investments that we need to further strengthen our deterrence and defense capacity", she added.

Țoiu also said that it is very important"to show a clear message that it is not acceptable for us to have a Russian drone enter our airspace."

A Russian drone entered Romanian airspace on Saturday evening and flew over the territory for 50 minutes, before leaving the country over the town of Padina.
