(Jakarta = Yonhap News) Correspondent Son Hyeon-gyu = On the evening of the 14th (local time), as a peaceful weekend was coming to an end, a gunshot suddenly rang out at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

Bondi Beach is Australia's most famous beach, attracting countless surfers and tourists, especially on weekends. On this day, a Jewish event was being held on the beach, drawing over a thousand attendees.

Two men of strong build, each carrying a rifle, ran along the beach and took aim.

As gunfire continued, tourists gathered on the beach panicked. One after another, people were shot and fell.

At 6:45 p.m., New South Wales (NSW) Police, which covers Sydney, received the first report. Soon after, police sirens blared across Bondi Beach, but the gunfire persisted.

A male citizen who had been hiding behind a vehicle and watching the gunman standing under a large tree and shooting with a rifle ran over and attacked him.

The man managed to grab the gunman's neck from behind and snatch his gun away.

The startled gunman stumbled backwards, watched the man aiming the gun he had taken from him, then backed away and ran toward the pedestrian bridge where his accomplice was.

Another male citizen was also filmed throwing something at the fleeing gunman, which was widely shared on social media.

Meanwhile, on the bridge, another gunman dressed in black continued to fire a rifle.

The gunman walked across the bridge, ducking to avoid incoming bullets, but continued shooting.

Ultimately, one of the two suspects was killed by police, and the other was arrested. The arrested suspect is reportedly in critical condition.

The shooting that day left 11 people, including children and police officers, dead and 29 others injured, including two police officers.

"Today we saw Australians rushing into danger to help others," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said."These Australians are heroes and their courage saved lives."

Australian media outlet News.com reported that the incident was believed to be a targeted attack targeting a Jewish event.

However, Australian authorities have yet to determine the suspects' motive for the crime.

However, Australian police are treating the shooting as a terrorist incident and will be investigating whether there are other suspects or groups behind it.

Australia is a country where mass shootings occur relatively infrequently.

After a mass shooting in Tasmania in 1996 that left 35 people dead, the Australian government banned ownership of automatic and semi-automatic firearms.
