The Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit is dominating headlines. China Daily today celebrates President Xi Jinping's Global Governance Initiative. The South China Morning Post  is also covering the story using a photo of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China's Xi Jinping. In India, papers are discussing the relationship between the three leaders. The Times of India  celebrates the fact that Modi and Putin shared a ride in a Russian limousine. The Hindu reports that Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said it was the"so-called elephant capitulating before the so-called dragon". The Russian news agency TASS praises the warm welcome for Putin.

The summit is on a lot of front pages in the rest of the world too. Le Figaro says Xi has united an anti-American front in opposition to US President Donald Trump. Die Welt features the leaders hand-in-hand. An analysis piece in Sky News argues that the summit is a show designed to rattle the West. For The New York Times, the three countries are trying to signal unity, despite their serious differences.

Rescue efforts are still underway in Afghanistan after Sunday's deadly earthquake. The New York Times is offering a geographical look at the 6.0-magnitude quake. Al Jazeera has an article explaining why shallow quakes are so dangerous, particularly for fragile homes and vulnerable communities.  Reuters reports that Trump's aid cuts have made the region particularly vulnerable and have worsened the scale of the catastrophe. Libération reports that thousands could die as a direct results of humanitarian cuts.

Israeli papers are discussing the latest freedom flotilla to leave for Gaza.  The Times of Israel  reports that the flotilla left Barcelona for the second time after having to stop for bad weather. Israel Hayom explains that the aim of the flotilla is to create a humanitarian corridor"despite Israel already providing humanitarian relief". The Jerusalem Post reports that far-right cabinet minister Itamar Ben Gvir plans to designate flotilla activists as terrorists.

Finally, the Visa pour l'Image photojournalism festival is in full swing in Perpignan. The Guardian brings us a few of the best snapshots from recent years.
