That's what it's about
- A total lunar eclipse occurred on Sunday.
- In Switzerland, the moon was visible from about 7:31 p.m.
- The eclipse reached its peak at about 8:11 p.m.
- The celestial spectacle was visible across much of the world.
The September full moon showed a special side on Sunday evening: It rose in the midst of a total lunar eclipse. This occurs when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, so that the Earth's shadow falls on the lunar surface.
We didn't notice the beginning of the eclipse here. It began around 6:30 p.m., when the moon hadn't yet risen here. Then it entered the umbra for the first time. Here, the Earth's satellite slowly rose behind the horizon from 7:31 p.m.
Lunar eclipse in Switzerland
When the full moon rises depends on the location. It was particularly visible early from Säntis. Due to its exposed location, it began to rise there at 7:37 p.m. In Scuol, it rose at 7:43 p.m., in Lugano at 7:48 p.m., in Zurich at 7:52 p.m., and in Geneva at 7:59 p.m.

According to astronomers, the most beautiful view occurred at 8:11 p.m., when the moon was at its most dim. The total phase lasted about an hour and ended at 8:53 p.m. Then the moon slowly emerged from the Earth's umbra. At 9:57 p.m., the moon finally emerged from the Earth's shadow. Then it reappeared as a circle in the sky.
According to timeanddate.com, around 7 billion people in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia had a chance to see this lunar eclipse. That's about 85 percent of the world's population. Our livestream showed what the total lunar eclipse looked like elsewhere.
Are you fascinated by celestial spectacles?
Yes, I always plan for them. Yes, but I don't actively look for them. It's okay. No, not at all.
