UPDATE the attacker fired a rifle through the church windows at children and believers

Police said the attacker fired a rifle through the church windows at children and worshippers attending the service.

Minneapolis authorities said two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed and 17 others injured, including 14 children, in a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School during the first week of school. The suspect, a man in his 20s, was found dead.

"The cowardice of shooting into a church full of children is absolutely incomprehensible," said Police Chief Brian O'Hara, according to the AP. The attack involved a pistol and a shotgun in addition to the rifle. Authorities found no explosives, only a device resembling a firework.

Mayor Jacob Frey offered his condolences to the families of the victims and asked the community to support the grieving families:"These children were literally praying. It was the first week of school. We can't just limit ourselves to thoughts and prayers; we need to be there for these families with everything we can offer."

The schoolchildren were evacuated and reunited with their families in the dedicated area.

Three people died, including the attacker, in the armed attack, US authorities told CBS News.

Another 20 people are reportedly injured, 10 of whom are in critical condition.

The attacker died from self-inflicted injuries, authorities told CBS.

UPDATE According to two federal law enforcement sources who spoke to CBS News, at least 20 people were injured in the shootings.

Both sources say the shooting began about an hour ago. Witnesses describe the attacker as a man dressed in black and armed with a rifle.
