Kuala Lumpur police have reclassified the death of  Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu Hsin whose body was discovered in a hotel room in October, as murder, following fresh developments in the ongoing investigation, reported the Malay Mail on Nov. 4.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief confirmed the reclassification in a statement on Nov. 3, saying the case was now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

“Further investigations are being carried out,” he said in a statement, according to Free Malaysia Today, without disclosing further details.

The deceased, Hsieh Yu Hsin, better known by her social-media handle Iris Hsieh, was a 33-year-old Taiwanese influencer who had travelled to Malaysia.

While there, she intended to collaborate with Malaysian musician and filmmaker, Wee Meng Chee, who goes under the pseudonym Namewee, according to Malaysian media reports.

She was found dead in a bathtub at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur the previous month in October. Early reports said there were no visible injuries on her body and her personal belongings were intact.

Namewee had reportedly been staying at the same hotel as Hsieh while they were working on a music video project.

Murder re-classification

Initial findings led authorities to classify the death as “sudden” pending a post-mortem report. However, subsequent evidence prompted investigators to upgrade the case to murder.

Authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made at this stage.

Namewee has denied taking drugs or being involved in Hsieh's death.
