247 - The Brazilian government expressed, this Sunday (22), deep concern about the recent military attacks conducted by the United States and Israel against nuclear facilities in Iran. In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs classified the offensives as a violation of Iranian sovereignty and international law.
“Any armed attack on nuclear facilities represents a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and the rules of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” Itamaraty stated, in a blunt tone.
According to the Brazilian government, attacks against nuclear facilities not only violate international treaties, but also directly endanger the lives of thousands of civilians. The note emphasizes that the attacks “represent a serious threat to the lives and health of civilian populations, by exposing them to the risk of radioactive contamination and large-scale environmental disasters.”
Brazil reiterated its defense of the peaceful use of nuclear energy and “firmly repudiated any form of nuclear proliferation, especially in regions marked by geopolitical instability, such as the Middle East.”
In addition to condemning the actions against nuclear facilities, the government also criticized the reciprocal attacks that have hit densely populated areas, causing increasing numbers of civilian deaths and the destruction of essential infrastructure, such as hospitals — which, as it emphasized, are “specially protected by international humanitarian law”.
Amid the escalation of violence, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry called for an immediate end to the confrontation and reinforced the need for a diplomatic solution to the impasse. “The Brazilian government reiterates its call for maximum restraint by all parties involved in the conflict,” the statement said.
The Brazilian position also warns of the long-term implications of the current war scenario: “The negative consequences of the current military escalation could generate irreversible damage to peace and stability in the region and the world and to the regime of non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.”
By taking a stand in favor of dialogue and international legality, Brazil reinforces its historical alignment with diplomacy as an instrument for conflict resolution — especially in contexts that threaten global security.
