He will appoint a new prime minister "in the next few days", according to the statement, Figaro reports.

The President of the Republic "will receive Prime Minister Francois Bayrou tomorrow in order to accept the resignation of his government," the Palace added, without giving further details.

  • "You have to save President Macron"
  • The fall is approaching - Macron has already prepared a replacement?

As previously stated by the Brussels portal Politiko, the obvious goal is to find a replacement for Francois Bayrou before September 18, when many of the largest unions in the country plan to go on strike. There are also calls for a nationwide shutdown on September 10, but two people who spoke to Politico said Macron's cabinet is not anticipating a mass turnout then - although they expect potential violence.

The strike on the 18th could paralyze France's transport networks as it will involve unions representing rail workers, air traffic controllers and Air France staff. Civil servants, including teachers, are expected to be on the picket lines.

"The real problem [for Emmanuel Macron's staff] is whether it will continue on the 19th and 20," one of the sources said.

"They are in a panic, they are calling everywhere to find out," Politiko was told.

François Bayrou's government was overthrown tonight after a vote of confidence , which Bayrou called himself. He thus became the sixth prime minister during Macron's mandate, as well as one of the shortest-lived prime ministers in the history of the Fifth Republic. His predecessor, Michel Barnier, held that position for a little less than three months.
