Morocco's International Diplomatic Activities

This visit is part of a sustained drive for rapprochement between Rabat and Moscow. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, will meet tomorrow, Thursday, October 16, with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced on Wednesday that this meeting will take place on the sidelines of the 8th meeting of the Russian-Moroccan Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, of which the two ministers are co-chairs.

According to Russian diplomacy, the discussions will focus on the current state and prospects for the continued and progressive development of bilateral relations. This framework will allow for an examination of the various aspects of cooperation between the two countries.

Maria Zakharova highlighted the strength of the political dialogue between Moscow and Rabat. She emphasized the proximity, even convergence, of positions on many major international issues, as well as the importance of maintaining regular consultation between the two capitals. The discussions are also expected to include sensitive regional issues. The two sides will discuss current issues on the global and regional agenda that are of common interest, with a particular focus on the situation in the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahel-Saharan region, the official said during her weekly press briefing.

Let us recall that this meeting comes two days after the Russian foreign minister's statements on October 13 in Moscow, during a meeting with Arab media, where he affirmed that his country was ready to support the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, to resolve the Sahara conflict. Sergei Lavrov had pointed out that the UN Security Council resolution is the only framework we know.

This diplomatic sequence also comes on the eve of the United Nations Security Council resolution on the Sahara issue and the future of the UN mission MINURSO, where Russia, a permanent member, will have a significant voice.
