Heatwave Warnings

In short

  • A heatwave is sweeping over Poland, reaching up to 32 degrees Celsius, especially in the south of the country.
  • Forecasts also predict storms, sometimes with hail, and strong wind gusts, especially in coastal and mountainous regions.
  • IMGW has issued meteorological and hydrological warnings regarding both high temperatures and possible river floods.

This weekend, anticyclone Ines will reach Poland, bringing us warmer weather and more sunshine.

Due to this, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued a first-degree heat warning, which will affect residents of the southern part of the country on Saturday and Sunday. It is expected to be exceptionally hot in the Lubusz, Lower Silesia, Opole, Silesia, Świętokrzyskie, Lesser Poland, and Podkarpackie Voivodeships.

Residents of the southern counties of the Lublin and Łódź voivodeships will certainly not complain about the lack of heat. Temperatures are expected to range from 29 to 31 degrees Celsius. The probability of their occurrence is estimated at 80 percent.

Weather forecast: Sunday will be a heatwave

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, initially there will be moderate cloud cover, later increasing to heavy cloud cover from the northwest, until there will be scattered showers in the west, north and central parts of the country.

Thunderstorms are also possible in Pomerania, where rainfall totals could reach around 15 mm in some places. Temperatures will range from 14 degrees Celsius in the east to 18 degrees Celsius in some places in the west, south, and along the coast.

It may get colder locally in the foothill regions of the Carpathians, where temperatures will hover around 9°C. The wind will be generally light from the south, initially easterly in places. By morning, it will increase to moderate, gusty winds in the west of the country, turning to the west and northwest. High in the Sudetes and during storms, wind gusts of up to 60 km/h may occur.

Rainfall during storms is forecast to reach around 20 mm. Maximum temperatures will range from 19°C to 21°C on the coast and in places in Pomerania, around 27°C in the center of the country to 32°C in the southeast.

Winds will generally be moderate, with strong and gusty conditions along the coast throughout the country. In the north, gusts may reach up to 55 km/h, from the west and northwest. During storms, wind speeds of up to 75 km/h will be possible, and high in the Sudetes, up to around 65 km/h.

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has also issued hydrological warnings for three voivodeships. In Podlasie, there is a risk of the Biebrza River rising to the mouth of the Netta River, with a second warning level in effect. The same situation is also observed in Mazovia, with the Wkra River rising to the mouth of the Łydynia River.

A flood exceeding warning levels may also be recorded in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in the Szczecin Lagoon. A second warning level has also been introduced there.
