Alarm in Poland and Romania over Russian drones – Fighter jets take off

Saturday, September 13

Alarms were raised in both Poland and Romania on Saturday afternoon amid a Russian drone attack on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Romania's Defense Ministry said two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after a drone violated its airspace during the Russian attack near the border. Romanian authorities warned citizens in southeastern Tulcea county, near the Danube and the border with Ukraine, to take shelter.

Romanian fighter jets reportedly spotted the drone in national airspace, which they followed until it disappeared from their radars 20 kilometers southwest of the village of Cilia Veche. The drone did not fly over populated areas and did not pose an immediate danger to the population, the statement said.

Meanwhile, Polish and allied NATO aircraft took off to protect Polish airspace. According to Polish authorities, the airport in the city of Lublin in eastern Poland was closed.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said the aircraft were taking part in an operation near the border with Ukraine to ensure the security of our airspace, three days after Poland, with the assistance of NATO military aircraft, downed Russian drones that had violated Polish airspace.

These actions are preventive in nature and aim to secure airspace and protect citizens, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened zone, the announcement emphasized.

There were no reports of new violations of Polish airspace.

Warsaw had complained that Russian drones violated its airspace on Tuesday night as Moscow launched an attack on Ukraine. Russia denied targeting Poland.
