President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew to the US to address a key issue - to discuss with US leader Donald Trump the expansion of weapons systems that the US would agree to sell.
As he said in an interview Axios Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak, at the top of Ukraine's wish list are Tomahawk missiles. Kyiv is still waiting for a decision and believes that"such weapons could change the rules of the game."
He stressed that Ukraine needs missiles to destroy drone and missile factories deep inside Russian territory. Kyiv also wants several other weapons systems that require US approval.
"We need a political decision from the US that we will be able to buy any weapons we need without any restrictions," Yermak said.
He acknowledged that there have been delays in the scheme by which NATO countries purchase American weapons for shipment to Ukraine, especially when it comes to air defense systems.
Even if Trump agrees to supply Ukraine with Tomahawks, it is unclear how many missiles the US will be able to allocate from its stockpile. In addition, the US has very few of the Typhon systems that Ukraine needs to launch these missiles.
American and Ukrainian military experts also believe that the US will likely provide older Tomahawk models that could be intercepted by Russian air defenses.

As UNIAN reported, Zelensky claimed that the very presence of missiles would a powerful trump card in negotiations with Putin , who will have to come to terms with the idea that Moscow is within Ukraine's reach.
"We can already see that Moscow is rushing to resume dialogue as soon as it hears about the Tomahawks," Zelensky said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Putin mentioned the Tomahawks during his conversation with Trump on Thursday, his foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters. According to him, Putin told Trump that"Tomahawks" will not change the situation on the battlefield, but will harm US-Russian relations and the peace process.
