Dazi, il cauto ottimismo di Meloni: Positivo che ci sia l’accordo. Ma il Pd: resa senza condizioni

There was a suggestion of holding the Trump-Putin summit in Rome regarding the war in Ukraine, but it has now fallen through due to Russia's opposition. The possibility of the US and Russian presidents meeting in the Vatican remains open, although at this point it appears unlikely. On Thursday 7th, Trump called President Meloni and proposed hosting the summit in Rome on Monday. The Prime Minister immediately expressed her willingness, and a few hours later, Rubio officially proposed Rome at the NSA meeting held between Italy, France, the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Ukraine, and Finland.

Zelensky immediately expressed his approval, saying he was very much in favor. However, Russia immediately opposed the move, which, it appears, considers Italy too aligned with Ukraine. This isn't the only obstacle. Putin is officially wanted on an international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court, and this also seems to have influenced the choice of venue. It's no coincidence that Putin declared:"We have many friends willing to help us organize this type of event. One of them is the president of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed, who is visiting Russia. I think we'll decide, but it would be one of the most suitable locations."

The Vatican hypothesis has not been denied, even if it doesn't seem the most likely at the moment. The willingness is there and remains. After that, we'll see.... At the highest levels of the Holy See, the possible meeting between Trump and Putin is being carefully monitored. The situation is more delicate than ever, the difficulties are innumerable, so naturally, prudence prevails. We have no knowledge of anything, however.... However, it's no mystery that the Vatican has long said it is available to facilitate a diplomatic solution to conflicts, not only in Ukraine. Francis already said so, and Leo XIV reiterated it clearly on May 14, six days after his election: The Holy See is available so that enemies can meet and look each other in the eye... Peoples want peace, and I, with my heart in my hand, say to the leaders of the peoples: let us meet, dialogue, negotiate! War is never inevitable; weapons can and must be silenced.

Secretary of State Pietro Parolin is still working, and Prevost has confirmed Cardinal Matteo Zuppi as his peace envoy. Contacts, Olteretevere explains, have never been interrupted. The Holy See's mediation has allowed the return home of some Ukrainian children and prisoner exchanges. The American Pope spoke to Putin by telephone on June 4, asking him for a gesture to promote peace, a significant step forward, as his predecessor had been unable to speak to the Russian president since the invasion of Ukraine. Prevost has confirmed his willingness to host peace negotiations in the Vatican. In these cases, nothing leaks out: on December 17, 2014, US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro announced the lifting of the embargo. It turned out that the delegations had met in the Vatican in the fall. It's difficult now; if it does, the Holy See will never announce it. The fact remains that the doors are and remain open.
