(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jeon Myeong-hun = US President Donald Trump's dream of winning the Nobel Peace Prize in his first year in office has been dashed.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on the 10th (local time) that it had selected Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Among the 338 people (including organizations and institutions) nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, Machado, who emerged as a key figure in the anti-Maduro camp during the last presidential election, took the honor.

President Trump's repeated requests for the Nobel Peace Prize were not accepted this year.

In fact, not many experts predicted that President Trump would receive the Nobel Peace Prize that day.

AFP reported the opinion of experts that President Trump had no chance of winning the Nobel Peace Prize because his"America First" policy directly clashes with the ideals of Alfred Nobel's will.

In his will, written in 1895, Nobel left a wish that the Nobel Peace Prize be awarded to"the person who has done the most or the best for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, or for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

In keeping with this Nobel legacy, the Nobel Committee has placed great emphasis on the post-World War II international order. However, Reuters analyzed that the possibility of Trump winning the award was very slim as he has been focusing on dismantling this order by advocating for America First.

President Trump himself has consistently argued that he should be the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

When asked about his chances of winning the award on the 9th, a day before the announcement of the winner, he emphasized his role as a peace mediator, saying,"No one in history has ever solved eight wars in nine months," and "I stopped eight wars."

Since taking office in January, President Trump has claimed to have ended seven armed conflicts, including those between Israel and Iran and Pakistan and India.

In addition, he said that he had ended eight"wars" by including the Phase 1 agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza peace plan announced the day before as one of his achievements.

He also criticized his predecessor, U.S. President Barack Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 in recognition of his efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation and bring peace to the Middle East, saying,"They (the Nobel Committee) gave him the prize when he did nothing but ruin our country."

President Trump previously said in a speech at the UN headquarters last month,"Everyone says I should win the Nobel Peace Prize," and in front of military generals that same month, he said,"It would be a great insult if (the United States) did not win the Nobel Peace Prize," revealing his desire for the Nobel Prize.

Each time, President Trump has cited his claim to have ended numerous wars around the world as evidence of his qualifications.

However, this claim is quite controversial.

For example, in the case of the Iran-Israel war, which Trump claims to have"ended," the US military intervention was a decisive factor. At the time, President Trump authorized the operation to drop large bunker-busting bombs on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The India-Pakistan conflict also saw President Trump declare a ceasefire, but unlike Pakistan, India did not acknowledge Trump's role.

Public opinion in the United States is also not favorable to President Trump.

According to a poll conducted by the Washington Post (WP) and polling firm Ipsos, 76% of Americans were against President Trump receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

Only 22% of respondents said President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

Some point out that the launch of the second administration itself is too late to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025.

The official deadline for nominations for this year's winner was January 31st, about ten days after the Trump administration took office.

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza War, announced on the day the winner was announced, was seen by many as a partial recognition of President Trump's role, but it was too late to have influenced this year's winner.

Many experts predict that President Trump will continue to seek the Nobel Peace Prize during his term.
