Israeli police have arrested the country's former attorney general after she leaked a video that apparently shows soldiers abusing a Palestinian prisoner.
This was announced by Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Monday.
Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi disappeared for several hours Sunday after announcing her resignation. Speculation swirled in the Israeli press that she might have taken her own life before she was found safe and sound.
A court in Tel Aviv has decided that she will remain in custody until Wednesday at 12 noon. She will be held in isolation and under increased surveillance, Ben Gvir said, according to Haaretz.
According to Israeli public broadcaster, she is charged with, among other things, abusing her position, breach of trust and attempting to obstruct the investigation. Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned as attorney general on Friday.
In her resignation letter, she wrote that she approved of the leaks to the media, writes BBC.
“It is our duty to investigate when there is reasonable cause to suspect violent acts against a prisoner,” Tomer-Yerushalmi wrote.
Four reservists were charged after the video was leaked in 2024. They are accused, among other things, of stabbing the Palestinian prisoner with a sharp object near the rectum.
