On the Kamchatka Peninsula, which was shaken by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake overnight, the Klyuchevskoy volcano, considered the largest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere, is now in the erupting area.

Klyuchevskoy, which is 4,750 meters high and is the highest mountain in Siberia, has erupted several times in recent years. The Russian seismological service confirmed the eruption of the volcano and wrote on the social network Telegram:"A flow of burning lava is visible on the western slope, explosions can be heard." The volcano spewed ash up to six kilometers high, foreign news agencies report.

Because it is a remote and uninhabited area, a volcanic eruption does not pose a danger to people. The nearest major city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is hundreds of kilometers away.

The earthquake, which is the sixth most powerful in recorded history, injured several people. There were no fatalities, but there was significant material damage. Due to the threat of a tsunami, evacuations were ordered in many countries along the Pacific coast.
