US President Donald Trump convened the National Security Council to address the conflict between Israel and Iran. The council will meet on Tuesday, said a White House official who asked not to be identified. Trump had previously toughened his tone toward Iran, fueling speculation about possible US intervention. Meanwhile, mutual attacks between Israel and Iran continued.
The Israeli army reportedly hit "dozens" of rocket launchers."Recently, the Israeli Air Force carried out a series of attacks in western Iran," the army said in a statement. The army further reported that Israel was the target of Iranian attacks. Most of the missiles were intercepted by air defenses, it added.
According to the Magen David Adom rescue service, there are currently no injuries. Sirens sounded in several parts of the country, including the coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv. People in the affected areas were allowed to leave their shelters shortly afterwards.
Israel had previously announced"several large-scale attacks" overnight on military targets in the west of the Islamic Republic. On Tuesday, the army then announced that it had killed the highest-ranking Iranian army commander, Ali Shadmani, in a nighttime airstrike on a"command center in the heart of Tehran" – just four days after his predecessor, Gholam Ali Rashid, was killed in a similar Israeli attack.
