The New York Yankees have held a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk.

It's unclear at the moment but circumstances on the ground would suggest "not".

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X about an hour ago saying"The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody".

However, at a press conference happening around the same time, local authorities including the police chief and an FBI representative said the search for the shooter continues.

And heavily-armed police including SWAT officers are still swarming the campus and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Nonetheless, there may be one or two people in custody.

Law enforcement confirmed they had apprehended a"person of interest" but did not elaborate further.

What's also unclear is whether or not that"person of interest" is the same person that police took into custody shortly after the shooting happened.

That person was initially released but later booked into the local jail under suspicion of obstruction of justice.

Conflicting updates can prompt confusion, but there is no indication the shelter-in-place order for people on campus has been revoked.

Mourners and well-wishers are leaving tributes to Charlie Kirk outside the national headquarters of Turning Point USA.

The building was closed up and workers sent home after news came of the conservative activist's death.

Flowers and placards were laid and grieving fans offered one another hugs and sympathy.

The US flag at the centre has been lowered to half mast.

Charlie Kirk was speaking in the middle of the Republican heartland when he was shot.

Kirk was at an appearance at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah.

The town south of Salt Lake City is one of the most consistently Republican parts of the US.

The county of the shooting, Utah County, voted for Donald Trump over Kamala Harris last year by a 68-29 per cent margin.

And while universities are far more likely to be left-leaning, all the precincts around the campus are all solidly Republican.

The largest university in Utah, UVU has 46,000 students.

Images from Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, show just how heavy the response is to what authorities have said is a targeted assassination.

Heavily armed officers in camouflage gear are seen scouring the campus, even hanging on to tactical vehicles.

Authorities are analysing CCTV but don't have much information about the suspected shooter.

They were dressed in dark clothing and may have taken their fatal shot from a room.

It was a"long distance" shot.

Six police officers as well as Kirk's own security team were providing protection at the event.

It seems one person is in custody, but that's the only universally confirmed fact by authorities at this point, with people at this press conference suggesting the search for the killer is still underway.
