US President Donald Trump has praised his meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday (Oct 30), calling the talks a"great success".
Speaking to reporters on board Air Force One, Trump said there was"no roadblock from China" on the rare earths issue, and that China has agreed to buy soybeans and other farming products from the US.
The US will, in turn, cut tariffs on China.
China controls much of the world's rare earth minerals, as well as the processing know-how, and the issue has been a sticking point in trade negotiations.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the APEC summit, was the two leaders' first in-person encounter since 2019.
Trump hailed the success of the talks, saying: “I guess on the scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12.”
On his part, Xi urged both sides to move quickly to finalise follow-up work to produce “tangible results”. Catch up on developments.
