Venezuelan Military Response

A major assigned to the Army's Command Against Transnational Threats (CONAT) was detained around midday this Saturday by members of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) at a border crossing near Cúcuta.

According to preliminary information from military sources, he was taken into Venezuelan territory, so protocols were activated for his release and return to Colombia.

EL TIEMPO learned that the officer —identified as Major Miguel Acosta— had recently been deployed to Cúcuta for operational requirements. On Saturday, the soldier traveled with his family to a border area near the Simón Bolívar bridge when he was intercepted by Venezuelan uniformed personnel.

"Apparently, the officer went to eat with his wife and children and activated Waze, but the app gave him a different address and took him to another location. There, apparently, were Venezuelan officers who detained him. They are trying to secure his release without having to activate diplomatic channels," a source said.

Sources indicate that the GNB detained him without giving reasons and proceeded to transfer him to the Venezuelan side of the international border. The situation was immediately reported by military personnel in Norte de Santander, who confirmed that internal protocols were activated to locate the officer and establish the circumstances of his detention.

So far there has been no official communication from Colombian or Venezuelan authorities regarding the whereabouts of Major Acosta or the reasons for the National Guard's intervention.
