The Hamas group delivered to Israel on Monday evening a coffin containing the remains of a deceased hostage who had already been returned to the family for burial, Israeli authorities announced after checks at the Tel Aviv forensic institute.

Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir called on the prime minister to respond harshly to Hamas.

On Tuesday, the prime minister's office noted:"Upon the conclusion of security consultations, Prime Minister Netanyahu instructed the military echelon to carry out immediate and strong attacks in the Gaza Strip."

The military wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, announced on Tuesday that it would postpone the handover of the body of a deceased Israeli hostage, citing the escalation of tensions by Israel, according to the Associated Press.

The brigades said that the Israeli actions"will hinder the search, excavation and recovery operations of the bodies, which will lead to a delay in their recovery."
