Political Reactions and Accusations

During a National Police promotion ceremony on Tuesday, August 12, President Gustavo Petro presented recognition to members of the National Police Corps who have distinguished themselves for their work within the institution.

The president also presented awards to the families of the police officers who lost their lives while carrying out their duty.

During his speech, the president asked for a minute of silence for the assassinated pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, however, he made a mistake when mentioning the name of the senator, as he confused him with"Mario Uribe", seconds later he corrected his mistake by mentioning the full name of the assassinated pre-candidate.

A minute of silence for peace, for the family and peace itself of Senator Mario Uribe Turbay... Miguel Uribe Turbay, sorry.

After making the mistake, those around the president made him realize his error, and thanks to this action, he rectified and corrected his mistake by mentioning the senator's name, followed by an apology.

This was President Gustavo Petro's reaction to the death of Miguel Urbe Turbay.

President Gustavo Petro spoke out following the death of Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died this Monday, August 11 after being the victim of a hitman attack on June 7 during a political rally in the Modelia neighborhood, western Bogotá.

In a lengthy post on social media, the president offered his condolences and condemned any form of political violence."My heartfelt condolences to the family of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, and to all Colombians. Life is above any ideology."

"Violence in Colombia has been defeated over the last few decades. After a political genocide unleashed between liberals and conservatives, which left 300,000 peasants dead, after another political genocide committed against the country's left, we have moved to a violence centered on illicit economies, which is increasingly confined to borders and ports. But death surprises us and still assaults us," he declared.

The Colombian president noted that this crime occurred under a"progressive, life-loving government," with a tragic outcome against an opposition senator.

Gustavo Petro spoke about the investigation currently being conducted by the Attorney General's Office."Their cases, still under investigation, currently mark a very different path than what was initially and prejudicially suggested. The investigation must be furthered. And it will be the competent authorities, assisted by international experts, who will make their decisions in due course."
