"The American side - as one of the guarantees presented to Kyiv - proposed, with Putin's prior consent, a mechanism similar to Article 5, but without admitting Ukraine to NATO," the agency's post reads.

Article five states that an armed attack against one ally will be treated as an attack against all.

Earlier on Saturday, Reuters reported on the plan to provide Ukraine with this form of security guarantee.

AFP reported that the proposal was presented to Kyiv on Saturday during a call between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and was later repeated in Trump's conversation with European leaders.

"Nobody knows exactly what this would look like and  why Putin would agree since (...) he is clearly opposed to any effective guarantees of Ukraine's sovereignty," another source told AFP.

The agency's interlocutor added that the issue is to be raised during Trump's meeting with Zelensky in Washington, scheduled for Monday.

The organization of a possible trilateral meeting between Putin, Trump and Zelensky, the role of Europe in the peace process, security guarantees and their effectiveness, as well as territorial issues are among many other issues to be discussed, AFP listed.

"Putin managed to push through the idea of Ukrainians leaving Donbas in eastern Ukraine," the source added.

Trump and Putin described Friday's meeting in Alaska as"constructive" but did not provide specific agreements. Trump noted that he agreed with Putin on many issues, but several important issues remained unresolved.

There was no announcement of a ceasefire, and Trump admitted that no agreement had been reached. However, he assessed that great progress had been made and said he would likely meet with Putin again soon.

The American leader wrote on the Truth Social website that the best way to end the war in Ukraine is to move directly to a peace agreement, not a ceasefire.
