Medical sources at the Hassan II University Hospital in Fez reported that the people injured in the collapse of two residential buildings in the Al Massira neighborhood of the Bensouda area on Tuesday-Wednesday night are still receiving treatment since being transferred to the hospital.

According to data provided by Rachida Zouazo, head of the Communication and Cooperation Department at the Hassan II University Hospital Center, 17 people who were injured in the collapse of the two buildings, both adults and children, are still receiving treatment at the hospital, with no new deaths recorded.

The spokesperson told Hespress that an eleven-year-old girl left the hospital after her condition improved, while five other children are still receiving the necessary medical care.

Among the adults, 11 people are still receiving treatment, including those with head injuries and wounds of varying severity.

After the same spokesperson confirmed that there was an improvement in the condition of some of the injured, she linked the possibility of their leaving the hospital to the decision of the medical staff supervising them.

In the same context, Hespress learned that administrative and judicial investigations into this disaster, which claimed the lives of 22 people, are ongoing, and are expected to bring down several local officials.

The newspaper's sources reported that the local authorities' overlooking the construction of two random floors on top of the two buildings that obtained a construction permit in 2006 is expected to lead to the dismissal of a number of them in the coming days, in light of the investigations being conducted by the provincial authorities under the supervision of Governor Khalid Ait Taleb.

The King’s representative at the Court of First Instance in the city of Fez announced the opening of an investigation to determine the circumstances and causes of the collapse of the two adjacent buildings, in order to ascertain the true causes of this incident and to reveal its circumstances and details.

The same source reported that the first building was empty of residents, while the second building was hosting a baby naming ceremony, and their collapse led to the death of 22 people, including children and women, in addition to 16 people being injured with varying degrees of severity.

Local authorities in Fez confirmed that as soon as they were notified of the accident, local and security authorities and civil protection services went to the scene to begin search and rescue operations.

These authorities have taken all necessary measures, including securing the perimeter of the two collapsed buildings, evacuating residents of neighboring houses as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the population in anticipation of any other potential dangers that may threaten their safety, and transferring the injured people to the University Hospital Center in Fez to undergo the necessary examinations and receive the necessary treatments.
